“We were all in it for the music, because it was underground there was no money. No one really understood what a DJ did…”
– Paul Oakenfold

You are about to embark on an unprecedented journey into the world of electronic music. In the 1980s and 90s, an underground musical revolution began in the streets of London, Berlin, New York, and Chicago. Led by visionary and maverick DJs and producers, the sounds and styles pioneered in the dark clubs and studios of Europe and America would eventually be named electronic music, and electronic music would soon take over the world.

Today, DJs and dance music have infiltrated the mainstream and literally reinvented pop music in the 21st century. Now it is a $6.2 billion industry that dominates airwaves, nightclubs, and festivals around the world.

But where did this music come from, how did it spread across the globe, how did the different genres evolve, and what makes it so contagious?

Electronic Evolution is a groundbreaking, multi-part, documentary series that will reveal the key events and innovations that created a cultural revolution. Told through a series of intimate and compelling portraits of electronic music’s pioneering DJs and modern-day superstars, each episode will focus on the evolution of a different sub-genre: House, Techno, Acid House, Trance, Drum and Bass, Hardcore/Hardstyle, Progressive House, Dubstep, and EDM.

We’ll meet the unique characters and innovators that broke new genres—and discover the origins of their distinctive thump. We’ll hit the streets of NYC and Chicago to follow the path of Grandmaster Flash and Frankie Knuckles; we’ll travel the globe with legends like Paul Oakenfold, Paul Van Dyk, Carl Cox, and Pete Tong to where it all began—in the clubs of Ibiza, the full moon parties in Goa and the illegal raves in London and Berlin. We’ll sit poolside with Skrillex, Tiësto, and Danny Avila, amidst the bacchanalian excess of Vegas and we’ll have all access passes at the world’s biggest festivals. Told through the eyes and experiences of the people that were there—the DJs, the insiders, the experts, Electronic Evolution will reveal the key events and turning points in electronic music history that started a cultural revolution.

With an epic soundtrack, and using stunning travel and archival footage, Electronic Evolution will be the definitive series on the genre. It will be essential viewing for the ever-expanding dance music fan base, and an undeniable starting point for all audiences to engage with this fresh, new, exciting and unstoppable world.

Electronic Evolution is produced by two of Canada’s leading production companies: Screen Siren Pictures, whose credits include award-winning documentaries such as Eco-Pirate: The Story of Paul Watson and feature films such as Hector and the Search for Happiness and Banger Films, the team behind the widely successful music documentaries Metal Evolution and Super Duper Alice Cooper, in association with electronic music legend Paul Oakenfold’s Perfecto Records and Vancouver’s Silo Entertainment.
