Read more about the Producer’s Lab at Toronto International Film Festival.

EFP, OMDC and TIFF set up platform for co-productions between Europe and Canada. With the aim of exchanging creative energy, experience and talents and promoting the co-production of international film projects, 12 European and 12 Canadian producers will be meeting for the new initiative entitled PRODUCERS LAB TORONTO. Created by European Film Promotion (EFP) in collaboration with the Ontario Media Development Corporation (OMDC) and the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), the programme will be launched this year between September 10 -12, during the Toronto International Film Festival. Regarded as the key gateway to the North American market, TIFF has always been important for European films. The MEDIA International programme of the European Union is supporting the initiative financially.

The programme is designed for independent producers who must have a track record of successful project development and production. Besides demonstrating a strong motivation in co-producing with Canada or Europe, they all have to be experienced in international co-productions and should have one project ready to pitch. The EFP network has selected the European participants from the group of EFP’s PRODUCERS ON THE MOVE between 2006 – 2009. The participants from Canada have been chosen by OMDC and TIFF.

Year of the Carnivore nominated for the Borsos Prize at the 9th Whistler Film Festival

Flesh-toned movie vies for Borsos prize

Year of the Carnivore, a B.C.-filmed comedy about a grocery-store worker who blackmails shoplifters into having sex with her, is among six films vying for this year’s $15,000 Borsos prize for best new Canadian film at the Whistler Film Festival.

Director-writer Sook-Yin Lee’s film stars American Cristin Milioti alongside Vancouver’s Ali Liebert and Will Sasso. Also vying for the prize is Defendor, an Ontario-filmed comedy from writer-director Peter Stebbings starring Woody Harrelson as a guy who thinks he’s a superhero, alongside Sandra Oh and Kat Dennings.

Both films premiered at the Toronto film festival, but are making their B.C. debuts at Whistler.

Also in the mix:

  • Quebec director Alexandre Franchi’s The Wild Hunt.
  • Machotaildrop, from the B.C. filmmaking team of Corey Adams and Alex Craig.
  • Quebec director Sophie Deraspe’s Les Signes Vitaux (The Living Rate).
  • Skid Love, from Ontario’s Ryan Arnold.

The Borsos award, named for the late director Philip Borsos, goes to the film picked by a jury that this year included producer-director Ivan Reitman, producer Niv Fichman and actor Jessica Paré. This year’s festival runs from Dec. 3 to 6.
